Even at the height of his success as a pianist, Gould wanted to be regarded as more than a performer: he wished to be a conductor, a commentator, a composer. At one point in his early life he described himself as "a composer who plays the piano,"6 a statement that reflected his ambitions. Stratford provided an opportunity for expanding his activities and gathering experience in various musical activities.
