Drawn by a sense of adventure, fifteen-year-old Andrew Stewart hires on as a clerk at the fur-trading post in Fort Chimo (Kuujjuaq) in Northern Quebec. He meets Pashak, a young Indian of the same age, and they become fast friends. Andrew spends the summer learning his trade, and, in the autumn, he and Pashak are sent to establish a post at Ghost Lake. The two youths undertake a perilous voyage during which they must endure cold and hunger. Andrew learns to live as the Indians do and realizes, after he returns to the post, that his first adventure in the North has taught him much.

After a cold winter, Deux Plumes is delighting in the arrival of spring. As he is lying on the fresh moss, a woman lovely as spring, with long soft hair appears before him. He falls in love with her. After several days of walking through the forest, Deux Plumes and his friend arrive at a big swamp. There she asks him to gather some dry grass and to rub two sticks together. A fire is created.

The illustrations, complete paintings in acrylics, capture the whole atmosphere of the story.

In order to measure Guerrier-Solitaire's courage and stamina, the ghost of one of his ancestors brings personal injury to the young hunter, thereby separating him from his travelling companions and forcing him to endure unending physical pain, cold and hunger. The ghost has earmarked Guerrier-Solitaire as the strong leader needed to help his Plains tribe prosper. Had he continued along the trail with his fellow hunters he too would have died in an ambush. Guerrier-Solitaire does indeed become chief of his people, and throughout his leadership maintains a close bond with the ghostly ancestor who so sorely tested yet saved him.

Taylor's illustrations are the strength of this book.

This time, the setting is the vast forests of North America where the Native peoples constructed their homes with that abundant renewable resource, bark. In this short but highly informative book, the reader is introduced to the strengths and versatility of this construction material, some of the very features which led to the demise of its use. Illustrations in colour and black-and-white pencil accompany the text.
