Message from Their Excellencies
the Right Honourable Ramon John Hnatyshyn
and Mrs. Gerda Hnatyshyn

Right Honourable Ramon John Hnatyshyn

Mrs. Gerda Hnatyshyn

As patrons of the "Read Up On It" program, we are pleased to send our greetings and congratulations to those participating in this worthwhile program.

Since its inception in 1988, the "Read Up On It" program has played an important role in alleviating the debilitating burden of illiteracy. In order to meet the demands of an increasingly technological and complex society, it is vital that we instill in our children a love of reading and learning. The "Read Up On It" program not only successfully encourages children to read, by promoting Canadian literature, it also helps to develop a uniquely Canadian sense of identity. Undoubtedly, we, as Canadians, will benefit from the enhanced competitiveness and productivity which accrues from a more literate and educated population.

We wish you continued success as you embark on yet another year of introducing the joy of reading to Canadian youth. We are, indeed, confident that your program will continue to enrich the lives of young people across Canada.
