Tom is trying to escape a past so dreadful that he blocks it out. He finds himself in downtown Calgary and cannot even remember his last name. He opens his backpack to discover a notebook, in which the pages are filled with writing about the opera The Magic Flute by Mozart, and they are full of spelling mistakes. After spending the night in a park, Tom wakes up to the sound of someone moaning. It is Samuel Wolflegs, a man in search of his son. Samuel had been praying for a "finder" -- someone to help him find his son, but Tom does not want to help. Samuel tells Tom that it is important that he find his son. Tom discovers that words have power: when he writes certain things in his notebook, they happen. In the end, he realizes that he wants to be a writer. Tom does find Samuel's son and he also finds his past through Mozart's music. But most importantly, he finds himself.
