The provinces of Alberta
and Saskatchewan
1905
When Saskatchewan and Alberta were created in 1905,
Saskatchewan became Canada's third largest province,
Manitoba remained the fourth largest, and Alberta became
the fifth largest. Winnipeg was already the third largest
city in Canada and would remain so for nearly a half
century.

This rare 1905 map was published by the Department
of the Interior - the federal government's main mapping
agency - on the eve of the creation of the provinces
of Alberta and Saskatchewan. This realignment of
Canada's internal borders had caught the department
somewhat by surprise. In order to have an up-to-date
map showing the new boundaries, the department's map
office took a map published two years earlier and
simply overprinted the new borders. This time-saving
move gave the department a few months to draft and
print a completely new map the following year.
