Senator Matthew Cochrane's letter to the Minister of the Interior
1881

Senator Matthew Cochrane sent this letter to the Minister of the Interior outlining his intentions to start large-scale cattle ranching in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Cochrane's initiative led to changes in the Dominion Lands Act which allowed cattle barons to lease large blocks of land at a nominal fee. The lease closed the ranch lands to agricultural settlement for the duration of the lease.
