Mair's claim for losses arising from the Red River Rebellion was submitted to a special commission appointed by the federal government. Mair was an outspoken member of the Canada First Party, a nationalist movement comprised mainly of recent arrivals from Ontario. During the rebellion, Mair was imprisoned and his house seized, but he managed to escape and return to Ontario where he campaigned for armed retaliation against the Métis "rebels."
