Map to accompany the report
of the Canadian Red River Expedition
1861,
by Henry Youle Hind
This map has Hind's handwritten observations on the
countryside surrounding the Lake of the Woods region.
The comments were written onto a map that was printed
by the Toronto firm Maclear and Company prior to the
expedition's departure.

Extensive wear along the folds (which have been
repaired by conservators at the National Archives
of Canada) indicates the map was probably carried
under extreme field conditions, and was folded and
unfolded many times. Hind's notations are written
with different pens and inks, as if they were recorded
over an extended period of time rather than at a single
sitting. Taken together, the evidence suggests the
map was carried by Hind in the field and the notations
compiled en route, rather than at the end of the voyage
when he prepared his manuscript for publication.
