Digital file format guidelines now online

The digital file format guidelines for preservation and long-term access are now available from Library and Archives Canada (LAC). The Local Digital Format Registry (LDFR) identifies and describes digital file formats that LAC either recommends for long-term preservation or those that, while they may not be preservation file formats, are acceptable for transfer to LAC. The identification and risk assessment of the sustainability of file formats is based on locally defined, but internationally informed, evaluation criteria.

The LDFR is one building block for the foundation of future digital preservation activities at LAC, and also provides guidance and advice for content creators, Government of Canada institutions, other Canadian memory institutions and digital preservation initiatives. The sustainability of digital file formats is a key component to ensuring continuing access to our digital documentary heritage.
