The sub-series consists predominantly of glass, nitrate, diacetate and safety negatives, lantern slides and prints that were produced by the Canadian Government Motion Picture Bureau between 1921 and 1941. The conrents are of the Royal Tour of 1939, state visits, portraits of Prime Ministers, Canadians egaged in various social and working activities, etc.

Original index cards and envelopes for the MPB materials have been microfiched. The CGMPB microfiche is available in Room 326 as part of FA-80 (NFB-VI – NFB-VIII), located in binders 7 and 8. DAP/FA-80 90 (Microforme)

Biographie / Histoire administrative

Canadian Government Motion Picture Bureau (CGMPB) was established in 1921 under the auspices of the Department of Trade and Commerce Exhibits and Publicity Bureau to make motion pictures and photographic stills to promote Canada's natural resources, industry and manufacturing. In 1941 the Canadian Government Motion Picture Bureau merged with the National Film Board by virtue of Orders-in-Council P.C. 3549 (11 June 1941) and P.C. 6047 (8 August 1941). The activities of the CGMPB were absorbed by the Still Photography Division of the National Film Board.

For more detailed information on the history of the Motion Picture Bureau, please refer to FA-80, vol. 3 report by Andrew Rodger. Much of the CGMPB materials was acquired in the 1971-271 accession, along with the items from Still Photography Division of the NFB

The Department of Industry, Trade and Commerce Fonds also contains a series relating to the Canadian Government Motion Picture Bureau which consists of a scrapbook detailing its activities from 1927-1943. CGMPB was a division within Industry, Trade and Commerce from 1921 to 1941.
