Biography / Administrative history
The 4th Canadian Siege Battery was organized in October 1915 as No.4 Overseas Siege Battery under General Order 151 of 22 December 1915. The battery was commanded by Major L.W. Barker. It was mobilized on Partridge Island, Saint John, N.B. and recruited from the 3rd Regiment, Canadian Garrison Artillery at Partridge Island, as well as in Saint John, Fredericton and Moncton.
The battery left Halifax 5 April 1916 aboard OLYMPIC. Its strength was 6 officers and 212 other ranks. It was redesignated the 131st (Canadian) Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery (RGA) on 7 May 1916 and became the No.4 Canadian Siege Battery on 29 January 1917. The battery arrived in France on 31 July 1917, becoming part of the 1st Canadian Heavy Artillery Group and, on 12 January 1918, part of the 2nd Brigade, Canadian Garrison Artillery. The battery was demobilized at Saint John in May 1919 and was disbanded by General Order 191 of 1 November 1920. The 4th Canadian Siege Battery was perpetuated by the 4th Medium Battery (Howitzer), Saint John.
