Portée et contenu

Collection consists of nine drawings and six watercolours by Thomas Mower Martin (1838-1934); six drawings by George Gibbs (1815-1873); nine watercolours and one oil painting by Paul Kane (1815-1872); six watercolours by Peter Rindisbacher (1806-1834); seven watercolours by William Armstrong (1822-1914); six watercolours by George Back (1796-1878); seventeen watercolours by Emile de Girardin (1829-fllg. 1864); as well as twelve watercolour, two drawings and one painting by various and unknown artists. The collection contains a diary of a fishing trip to Hunter Island, Ontario, in September, 1899, including text and 24 cyanotypes, along with one photographic portrait. Also in the collection is a letter dated 17 July 1919, to Bushnell from the dealer John Loomis, enclosing a letter dated 25 July 1860, from the Canadian artist Cornelius Krieghoff to the American traveller, sportsman, artist and author Charles Lanman (1819-1895). The works were acquired as part of Bushnell's interest in Native American history and life.

Biographie / Histoire administrative

David Ives Bushnell was an independently wealthy American anthropologist, who spent his life studying and writing about the North American Indian. During the course of his career, he acquired a large collection of works of art, documenting the history and life of American aborigines, which was given to the Peabody Museum after his death.
