The subject is the interior of a [drawing room] viewed from a doorway. At the left of the space is a round column with a variation on a corinthian capital. At the right of the column is a fireplace with a surround consisting of classical mouldings. Over the mantel is a painting of a marine scene. To the left of the fireplace is a fire screen and to the right a pedel harp. The room contains two round pedestal tables. Next to one of these a male figure sits reading in an upholstered armless chair. Another upholstered chair is partially obscured by the left side of the doorway. The artist has suggested a vaulted ceiling below which is a crown moulding with a repeating dentil ornament below it. Hanging from the ceiling is a lighted chandelier with five visible branches. It may be a gasolier. At the right of the work is a gathered and swagged drape with a corded edge and a tassel. There are baseboard mouldings at the bottom of the doorway.
