Portée et contenu
An interior scene depicting the architecture and furnishings of a sleeping cabin on HMS INCONSTANT. The deckhead is reinforced with crossbeams. Attached to it is a curtain rail curved around the berth with gathered, swagged striped curtains at each end. The berth is a platform fastened to the deck above with ropes in a fan-shaped arrangement. A poke bonnet and a plaid item of clothing have been placed on the berth which has striped coverings and a striped pillow. Printed curtains are gathered and swagged on either side of a square-paned n window which slopes outward from the top. Fringe is attached to the bottom of a valance covered with printed fabric matching the window curtains. Below the window is an eight-drawer chest covered with objects. A basket with handles hangs from a hook to the right of the window. Closer to the foreground at the right, plaid fabric hangs at the top of the bulkhead. The deck is covered with a plaid carpet and the bulkheads with a striped paper or fabric. In the English watercolour tradition, interior scenes are rare.
