An interior scene depicting the architecture and furnishings of the after cabin on HMS INCONSTANT. The deckhead, below which there is a decorative border, is reinforced with crossbeams. Across the deckhead is the suggestion of a rail to draw across the curtain which is gathered at one end. At the right, printed fabric curtains are gathered and swagged to either side of two square-paned octopartite-light windows which slope outwards from the top. Fringe is attached to the bottom of a valance covered with printed fabric matching the curtains. The bulkheads have been convered with a striped paper or fabric and the deck has a patterned carpet. There is a door on the bulkhead facing the viewer. The cabin is furnished with a sofa and end cushions convered in the same fabric as was used for the curtains, a round occasional pedestal table, an armchair with fabric covering the seat and back, a rectangular [ottoman] covered with a printed fabric, a large round pedestal table with a central baluster above cabriole legs and a rectangular table with a fretwork gallery on the sides and back and the suggestion of escutcheons and pulls at the front. There are unidentified objects on two of the tables. In the English watercolour tradition, interior scenes are rare.
