Portée et contenu

The subject is a genre scene / marine scene depicting a house owned by Edward Ellice at Beauharnois at the edge of the St. Lawrence River. The one-storey house, which is surrounded by vegetation, has a bell-cast gable roof. A single casement window at the front has nine panes. A female figure wearing a broad-brimmed hat stands with her arms folded in the doorway. Two other female figures wearing broad-brimmed hats approach the front of the house. To the right of the work a building with a shed roof which seems to be attached to the main house. In the river is a manned boat with two seated figures next to a canoe which is partially visible. In the distance, two masted vessels are seen approaching the opposing shore.
