This sub-series brings together three bundles of correspondence designated "Private Official" and "Misellaneous Canadian" at the time of microfilming, plus several printed items relating to the Province of Canada. The geographic range of this correspondence actually extends across British North America. The vestiges of its original order were more evident in the correspondence when the bundles were microfilmed than at present. The evident groupings demonstrated that the arrangement principles followed the "responsibility centre" concept by bringing together letters to and from fellow governors (by colony), the Commander of the Forces (Sir Benjamin D'Urban and William Rowan) and the Admiral (Sir George Seymour) on the Atlantic station, politicians and senior officials within the Province of Canada, and private individuals (sometimes clustered by topic). The correspondence addressed topics ranging over the political developments and local affairs within the Province of Canada, as well as popular opinion about and threats against Lord Elgin; inter-colonial concerns with boundaries, fisheries, railways, postal service, telegraphs and trade; and economic and political relations with the United States, most notably the Reciprocity Treaty.
