Portée et contenu

This sub-sub-series brings together a variety of drawings, watercolors and lithographs created by Lady Mary Louisa Lambton Bruce, during her visit to Upper and Lower Canada in 1838 with her parents (Lord and Lady Durham) and her residence in the Province of Canada, 1847-1853, as the wife of Lord Elgin. Some of these works were found loose in her albums covering those periods, others were found apart, with a questioned attribution to her drawing-master Coke Smyth. The works of 1838 may have been studies for the drawings and watercolors she chose to mount in her album. Certain works bear evidence of having been mounted in the 1838 or 1847-1852 album but subsequently detached (notably those loaned for the 2003 exhibition). The pair of lithographs exemplify Lady Elgin's contributions to benevolent ventures.

Information additionnelle

Historique de la conservation
On arrival in 2010, works now designated items 1, 4-6, 8-11 and 14 in volume 22 were found loose in the 1838 album, while items 2-3, 7, 12-13 and 15-18 were found in a folder ascribed to Coke Smyth. The watercolors now designated items 1 and 2 in volume 23 had been removed from the 1838 album for the 2003 exhibition. The work now item 4 in volume 23 had been framed an hung at Broomhall. Evidence demonstrates that the works now designated items 19, 20, 22 and 24-28 in volume 22 and 3 in volume 23 are astray from the 1847-1852 album - several having been removed for the 2003 exhibition. To be confirmed: volume 22, items 7, 8, 21, 23; volume 23, items 3 and 7-8.
