This sub-series brings together a journal of 1837-1839 and two albums of 1837-1839 and 1847-1852 compiled by Lady Mary Louisa Lambton Bruce, Countess of Elgin and Kincardine, plus a number of drawings, watercolors and lithographs she created; a bundle of letters she received from her husband, 1847-1854; and a number of mementos linked principally to her second sojourn in Canada. The journal and album of 1837-1839 complement one another, enhancing the opportunities to perceive the world through Lady Mary Louisa's eyes. The range of works over the decades illustrates not only the development of her artistic skills and the range of her interests in the world around her, but also how she used her art in the support of charitable causes and to inform family in England and Scotland about the new world she inhabited as wife of the Governor of the Province of Canada.

Historique de la conservation
The journal and two albums arrived in their original bindings. The bundle of letters from Lord Elgin remaind folded until listed by the National Register of Archives for Scotland. Each of these has been paginated separately. Various art works found loose in the albums, together with detached album pages and works received in portfolios have been brought together for storage purposes in volumes 22-23; as items they did not require page numbers. Among the mementos, only the printed memorial booklet bears page numbers. Several albums recording travels in Great Britain and on the Continent, and various other art works by Mary Louisa Lambton Bruce with no immediate link to Canada, remain at Broomhall. The possibility that she purchased those albums and mounted her drawings and watercolors in them while resident in the Province of Canada rremains to be explored.
