Inscription: in brushpoint and brown paint, verso: This is the Portrait of General James Wolfe painted by / Highmore about the year 1742. The General sat for it for the express / purpose of presenting it to his much esteemed Tutor and Friend, the Rev.[^d] S.F. Swinden; it is the only Picture the General ever sat for, it / represents him in his Ensign's uniform of the 20.[^th] regiment, when / he was preparing to join that Corps, on getting his first commission, / which subsequently became so celebrated in the service under / his command. All other Pictures of this renowned man / are copies taken from a miniature, which was drawn from / this Picture by the desire, and for M[^rs]. Wolfe, the General's mother, / after his lamented, but glorious death -
