Portée et contenu

Head and shoulders portrait of a young African-Canadian boy. Lady Falkland was in Halifax during her husband's term as governor of Nova Scotia, 1840 to 1846. Two other works by McKie, (1990-207-31X and -33X) are inscribed "bought by Lady Falkland." McKie exhibited four works at the Halifax Mechanics institute exhibit at Dalhousie College in September, 1848.
Nova Scotia had a relatively large "coloured" population: approximately 3000 emigrated to Nova Scotia during and after the American Revolution, and 2000 after the War of 1812.
