Biographie / Histoire administrative

The Norway House Agency in Manitoba was responsible for bands in Treaty 5, Manitoba. The first agent for the Norway House Agency was appointed on 1 January 1877. The agency was also variously referred to in departmental sources as Treaty 5 Agency; Grand Rapids; Berens River (1885-1903); Norway House Northern Div. (1911); and Norway House Southern Div. (1911). In 1911-1912, the Fisher River Agency was created with responsibility for a number of bands previously administered by the Norway House Agency, leaving the Norway House Agency with administration responsibility for the following bands: Norway House, Cross Lake, Nelson House, Split Lake, Oxford House, Gods Lake, and Island Lake. Later, the creation of the Nelson River and Island Lake agencies resulted in further reductions in the responsibility of the Norway House Agency. In 1972 the Norway House Agency was closed and the bands previously under its administration became the responsibility of the Regional Office.
