Series consists of records created and maintained by the Interdepartmental Committee on Housing. The records include correspondence, minutes, surveys, and reports. These records have become a part of the Department of Finance fonds because of the department's role as a central agency whose terms of reference extend to financial matters across all government activities. The series also contains records that were formerly arranged as part of RG35-4. These records include the following: organization files; correspondence related to education and taxation problems, the Residential Construction Survey, and the Wartime Housing Limited; a report of the Research and Statistics Branch; and minutes of meetings of the Committee.

Biographie / Histoire administrative
The Interdepartmental Committee on Housing was established as a postwar effort to provide houses to Canadians. The Committee was brought into existence by Order in Council (P.C. 3409, 10 May 1945) and amended by (P.C. 7484, 28 December 1945). Its function was the co-ordination of government activities in the field of housing particularly during the immediate post war housing shortage. During the Second World War housing construction was not a priority, but after the end of the conflict there was an urgent need for new houses due partially to Rehabilitation Measures for soldiers. The Committee was responsible to both the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Reconstruction and Supply. It was dissolved by Order in Council (P.C. 5180, 19 December 1946).
