Biographie / Histoire administrative

According to annual reports, the Canadian National Railways, Personnel and Labour Relations office underwent a number of changes. From 1923-1930 the personnel and labour relations function was the responsibility of the Superintendent of Pensions and Relief (Surintendant des pensions et secours) under the Department of Insurance, Lands, Express, Telegraphs, Colonization, Development and General Matters. This department evolved with a changing corporate structure but the position remained constant. While the personnel function is not listed in annual reports from 1931-1934, it later appears under the following names: the Department of Personnel, 1935-1941; the Department of Labour Relations, with positions of Chief of Personnel (listed in 1942) and Director of Labour Relations, 1942-1947; the Personnel Dept (Service des Relations ouvrières), 1948-1951; Personnel, 1951-1959; and Personnel and Labour Relations (Personnel et Relations ouvrières), 1960-1969. After 1969, these functions become two separate departments, Human Resources and Labour Relations. RG30 General Inventory.
