Fonds consists of historical research: manuscripts, including material relating to the journals of Robert Campbell and Alexander Hunter Murray and letters of John Bell published by the Archives in 1910 as "Journals of the Yukon", 2.5 cm; historical research: memoranda and notes, relating to various collections, 2 cm; historical research: documents, including correspondence from the Hudson's Bay Archives, and Simon Fraser letters, 1697-1852, 3 cm; literary manuscript on author and poet Isabella Valancy Crawford, 5 cm; correspondence concerning the formation of a national library, 1918-1919, 9 pages; correspondence and clippings about the Crowsnest Pass, 1923, 3 pages; and corresppondence relating to illustrations in the "Fifth Book of Reading Lessons", 1944-1945, 17 pages. The fonds also contains photographic material depicting the following: portraits of Sir Charles Tupper by Topley; Sir Robert Borden; members of the Royal Society of Canada; views of Montreal, Quebec and Kootenay, British Columbia; Fort Ellice, Manitoba, 1879, by G.M. Dawson; Athabasca River at Prairie Creek, Alberta; Frances Lake, Ontario, 1939; Lewes Creek, Yukon, 1939; various Canadian authors such as Robert Barr, J.F. Herbin, J.C. Hopkins, William Kirby, Agnes Laut, Agnes Machar, T.G. Marquis, J.M. Oxley, Charles G.D. Roberts, Ernest Thompson Seton, Edgar Smith, F. Clifford Smith, William Withrow and Joanna Wood.

Biographie / Histoire administrative
Lawrence Johnston Burpee, historian, author and public servant, joined the public service in 1890. He was private secretary to three successive Ministers of Justice in the Federal Government and Librarian of the Ottawa Public Library, 1905-1912. From 1912 until his death, he was Canadian Secretary of the International Joint Commission. One of the founders of the Canadian Historical Association, he was the author of several historical works, notably on the development of the Northwest. He was also the author of a collection of sketches on Canadian authors, including Isabella Valancy Crawford, entitled "A Little Book of Canadian Essays", 1909, as well as other literary works.
