Biographie / Histoire administrative
Lawren S. Harris, artist, was born in Brantford, Ont. After travelling in Europe and the Middle East, 1904-ca. 1909, Harris settled in Toronto, where, with Dr. James MacCallum, he built the Studio Building on Severn St., and was instrumental in the formation of the Group of Seven. For the next twenty years, Harris painted throughout Canada, with other members of the Group. During the 1930s, Harris lived in the United States, for a time as artist in residence at Dartmouth College, N.H. He moved to Vancouver in 1942, where he remained until his death.
Harris was co-founder of the Canadian Group of Painters, 1933, and the Federation of Canadian Artists, 1940. He was a trustee of the Emily Carr scholarship fund, a member of the board of the Vancouver Art Gallery, and was associated with the Theosophical Society in Canada.
