Formerly known under the name "Department of Insurance", the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions, established in 1987, is responsible for protecting the public against financial loss from the operations of federally registered or licensed insurance companies and financial institutions, ensuring the solvency of pension plans, and providing actuarial services for government departments and agencies.

The records in this accession consist of a variety of files related to the liquidation or winding up of the Commonwealth Trust Company. As such they contain correspondence, auditor's meetings, as well as other information concerning the holdings and activities of Commonwealth Trust.
