Remarks briefly on family estate matters. Comments at length on the complexities of relations between civil and military authorities within the colony, the segregation of civil and military authority (between the Governor and the Commander of the Forces) for the Province of Canada after settlement of the Oregon boundary dispute, on Elgin's sensitive position relative to Lord Cathcart in 1847, and on Sir Benjamin D'Urban's capacities; alludes to the impertinent claim of Lieutenant Robert Kerr to replace his cousin Lord Mark Kerr as ADC.
