Scope and content

This map shows the area of present day North and South America. The northern outline for Australia also appears. This version of the map includes the Solomon Islands and terra del Fuego.

The map first appeared in the 1570 edition of Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. This example is state three, with the bulge in South America removed and additional sailing ships added in the Pacific Ocean and a cartouche has been added in North America with the following text "Vlterius septentrionem versus hae regiones incognitae adhuc funt"

On verso text titled "El orbe Nuevo" appears on right hand side with foliation "5" on bottom of text.

Map is illustrated with symbols for settlements, sea monsters and sailing vessels. The title and secondary cartouches as well as the four corners of the map have decorative elements.

Physical condition note
On verso brown paper adhesive reinforcing map along the outer margin.

Custodial history
Part of the Alexander E. MacDonald Canadiana Collection purchased by the Public Archives of Canada in 1981.
