Scope and content
The title refers to the Saint Anne River. A riverscape depicting a partial view of a beam bridge crossing Rivière Sainte-Anne, a tributary of the St. Lawrence River. The deck of the bridge consists of logs placed horizontally between two curved wooden beams. At the left of the work, the beams are braced to a supporting cut stone pier by two pairs of inclined posts. At the left is a partial view of another supporting structure. Under the bridge, a figure is seated on exposed rocks bent over a task, perhaps washing a garment, at the shallow water's edge. The figure is wearing a sleeveless waist coat over a shirt with wide sleeves and a [straw] hat with a low crown and a narrow brim. Beyond the figure, on the shore opposing the viewer is a verdant hilly landscape and in the distance a mountainous area. Behind the pier at the right the land rises sharply from the shore. At the top of this cliff are deciduous and conifer trees.
