Scope and content

The title refers to the Hudson River. A riverscape / marine scene depicting a view of several masted sailing vessels in a mountainous region along the Hudson River where the land rises sharply from the shoreline. In the center of the composition is an island around which the vessels are manoeuvering to pass it. The vessels are single-masted and fore and aft rigged with sails unfurled.
