Scope and content
A marine scene / genre scene depicting a view along the beach on the Rockaway Peninsula of Long Island. At the right of the composition is the [Atlantic Ocean]. In the left foreground, a female figure in semi-profile, wearing a poke bonnet, is seated on the ground looking down at a [book]. She partially faces away from the viewer and the Ocean. The figure of a male child leans with his back against her right shoulder. He faces the Ocean and is holding a long stick, perhaps a fishing pole. On the beach in the middleground is a foreshortened cart with two visible wheels. There is the suggestion that it is being pulled by a draught animal down the beach away from the viewer. To the right of the cart, a female figure wearing a poke bonnet is looking out to the water while walking along the beach close to the shore line. Ahead of her is another figure. In the distance is the suggestion of other figures and unidentified structures on the beach which seems to curve around to the right at the horizon. In the water is a fore and aft rigged vessel with its sails unfurled. The beach gently rises from the shoreline and at the left of the work beach grasses grow out of the sand.
