Scope and content
A marine scape depicting a view of Oswego at the mouth of the Oswego River on the southeastern shore of Lake Ontario. At the right of the work, Fort Ontario is located at the top of a bluff on the east bank of the River overlooking a long dock extending into the Lake. The artist has suggested the sloping outer face of the walls of the fort. A fore and aft riggedsailing vessel sails near to the dock. Along the shore towards the foreground are three timber stacks, two of which have been roughly sketched. Alongside a low dock nearest to the foreground is a two-masted vessel with with a bowsprit extending from the bow. On the other side of the low dock is another masted vessel. Figures stand at the end of this dock beyond which is a manned unmasted boat with three figures, one of which is manoeuvering the vessel with a long pole. In the background, several masted vessels sail eastwards on Lake Ontario into the distance.
