Scope and content

A landscape / marine scene depicting a view from behind a split-rail fence at an elevated point down towards buildings at Montreal, vegetation and the St. Lawrence River. At the left of the work the land rises to a point higher than the view point. In the distance at the centre is Notre-Dame Basilica with its completed twin towers. Two church spires are visible. One may be part of Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Bonsecours. The other spire may belong to Notre-Dame-de-la-Pitié. Across the River the artist has suggested Île des Soeurs and beyond the Island, the land of the opposing shore. The flat construction of the vessel in the River suggests a steamship.
