Scope and content
The title refers to the Island of Orleans. A marine scene depicting a view of buildings and a church on the shore of Île d'Orléans in the St. Lawrence River from the shore of the Island. At the left foreground are rocks and vegetation beyond which are the bell-cast gable roofs and church spire of an unidentified village. At the right foreground, close to the rocky shore, a manned ship's boat is flying a white ensign with a St. George's cross. Of the several figures seated in the boat, all but one are wearing red garments. Beyond the ship's boat is a single-masted manned vessel with its sail furled. In the distance beyond the Island is the mainland.
