Scope and content

The title refers to the St. Lawrence River near [Pointe-Saint-Michel]. A marine scene depicting a moon-lit view of Île d'Orléans and beyond to the mountainous north shore of the St. Lawrence River from the south shore near [Pointe-Saint-Michel]. In the centre foreground, anchored near the south shore, is a manned ship's boat flying a white ensign with a St. George's cross in the canton. Seven figures, four of which are wearing red garments, are seated in the boat. To the left of the ship's boat and in the distance are several fore and aft rigged sailing vessels. The full moon is low on the horizon and its light is reflecting on the water. Buildings among gently rolling hills follow the shoreline of the Island. In the foreground are several exposed rocks at the shore.
