Scope and content
The title refers to Saint Patrick's Hole, Island of Orleans. A marine scene depicting a view of St. Patrick's Hole, a cove on the southwestern shore of Île d'Orléans from the shore of the island. A three-masted square-rigged vessel with unfurled sails and the suggestion of gunports is in the River just beyond the cove. At the entrance to the cove is a single-masted fore and aft rigged vessel and close to the shore of the Island is a three-masted vessel with one sail fore and aft rigged. In the foreground at the right is a partial view of a building with a gable roof. In the centre and at the far right of the foreground are deciduous trees. The landmass in the distance forms part of the south shore of the St. Lawrence River.
