Scope and content
A landscape / genre scene depicting the profile of a female figure, probably Elma Bruce, standing next to the gate of a split-rail fence at Monklands. The figure is wearing a broad-brimmed hat with a flat crown. A ribbon is tied around the crown with a bow at the back. Ribbon falls down the front of the figure from under the brim. She wears a jacket style bodice with long narrow sleeves and closely fitted to the waist with a peplum flaring out below the waist following the line of the skirt. She also wears a dome-shaped supported plaid skirt falling just below the knee. Under the skirt are pantelettes with trimming at the bottom. Her hair falls below the shoulders in large curls. She is looking at a branch of Mountain Ash with clusters of Rowan berries which she holds in front of her in her right hand. At the left of the figure is a bush and beyond, a picket stockade fence. At the top of the composition three birds fly above the scene.
