1 watercolour: pencil and watercolour with white highlights on wove paper; 12.4x18.1 cm (image); 27x36 cm (folio)

Scope and content

The title refers to Pointe-Lévy [Lévis]. A townscape / marine scene depicting a view of buildings and fences at Pointe-Lévy and beyond to the St. Lawrence River and its north shore near Québec. Several of the buildings have bell-cast gable roofs and dormer windows extending from the roof face. Chimneys straddle the roof apex. A male figure with his back to the viewer stands behind a split-rail fence which marks an enclosure behind the buildings. He is carrying a long staff and there is a small animal at his feet. He is wearing a broad-brimmed hat and a dark waistcoat with one visible full shirt sleeve. On the far side of the enclosure, right of centre two figures wearing broad-brimmed hats stand behind the fence. The masts of sailing vessels at the shoreline can be seen and across the River, buildings follow the shoreline above which the land rises in the distance. The artist has depicted the western end of Île d'Orléans at the right of the composition and in the background the opposing north shore of the River. In the water, there are several masted sailing vessels with sails unfurled.
