Scope and content
The subject is a seated female figure with her back to the viewer looking towards an opening in the arcade of the cloister at Lampton Castle to the wooded Wear Valley. The figure is wearing a shawl with a ruffled border folded over from the neck and a poke bonnet with a cylindrical crown and a broad funnel brim. A ribbon is tied around the crown at the bottom. A veil is gathered and laid across the top of the crown. She sits on a low rectangular footed stool. The cloister has a coffered ceiling. The arcade, which follows a rectangular shape, consists of a series of Tudor arches characterized a flattened central point. Plants potted in urns with decorative fluting are distributed along the arcade in the openings.
