Place of creation

1 watercolour; pencil and watercolour on white wove paper; 16x24 cm (image); 26x36 cm (folio)

Scope and content

A marine scene depicting a view of the port of Cherbourg from its harbour. The centre of the composition is dominated by two painted and attached four-storey buildings with casement windows and shutters. The gabled roofs have chimney stacks. On either side, the artist has portrayed other buildings with less distinction. Several figures stand along the waterfront. A figure wearing a red garment rides a black horse. Several masted vessels lie in the harbour.
