Scope and content
A rough sketch of a genre scene / marine scene depicting sailors working on a gun deck of the HMS INCONSTANT. Two sailors stand shoulder to shoulder facing a mast with their backs to the viewer to the right of the ship's wheel. The sailor on the left is outstretching his left arm with his hand on a spoke. Each is wearing wide-legged, straight-cut trousers and a frock tucked into the trousers. The frock has a sloping shoulder line with gathers falling down from the neck. Both wear round-cut collars and broad-brimmed hats with low, flat crowns. At the right of the work, are four ship's guns mounted on carriages and extending through the gunports. The pommelions and breech mouldings are visible. To the right of the furthest gun, a ladder extends to the rigging. Above the guns, shrouds and ratlines form a net. In the distance, two sailors are conversing below a square-rigged sail. The artist has shown the fore and aft curvature of the ship.
