Scope and content
A rapid sketch of a genre scene / marine scene depicting a view sailors working on board HMS INCONSTANT. At the left of the work are two ship's guns behind which a sailor with outstretched arms is about to climb a ladder. He is wearing a short jacket with a flat collar, wide-legged trousers and a broad-brimmed flat-crowned hat tied under his chin. A ribbon is tied around the crown. The male figure in the centre of the composition, who appears to be observing the activities around him, is wearing a cloak over an outer coat and a low-crowned hat with a narrow curved brim. Behind him is the stern of a ship's boat. To the right in the background, another sailor is working at a ship's boat. Two masts with square-rigged sails are visible. The mast in the foreground is encircled with a number of belaying pins set into a structure at the base.
