Scope and content
The subject is a townscape depicting one- and two-storey buildings in Lower Town, Quebec. The building at the left of the work has an octopartite-light, square-paned casement window, a passageway through a round-headed arch and a steep gabled bellcast roof. The building in the centre of the group has dormer windows extending from the roof. In general, the buildings have wooden-framed casement windows set flush with the outside walls. Some of the buildings have ladders extending downwards from the apex of the gabled roof. Chimneys are also located at the roof apex. A British soldier stands in a doorway in the foreground of the work. The top right is dominated by the curtain walls and projecting ravelins of the fortifications on the escarpment at Cap Diamant. Soldiers stand in the lower ravelin overlooking the St. Lawrence River, a square-rigged vessel and the land rising from the opposing shore. A flag hangs from a pole in the upper ravelin. Buildings are seen behind the lower walls and a building behind the upper wall at the top of the escarpment.
