Scope and content
Drawn on HMS Hastings. The subject is a genre scene depicting a soldier with his back to the viewer seated behind a ship's gun extending out of a gunport. He is wearing a Balmoral bonnet with the suggestion of a diced band and toorie. Facing the viewer at the right is a sailor with his hands clasped in front of him. He is wearing wide-legged trousers, and short jacket with a notched collar and a broad-brimmed hat with a flat crown.
