Scope and content

Drawn on HMS Hastings. The subject is a genre scene depicting a sailor seated beside a box with his back to a mast. He is splicing line. He is wearing wide-legged trousers, a jacket with a round-cut collar and a broad-brimmed hat with a flat crown. In the background, two figures are seen on a lower deck beyond a rail. The rigging is roughly sketched.
