Scope and content

Title probably refers to Sir J. Dorratt. Drawn on board HMS HASTINGS. The subject is a genre scene depicting a male figure with his back to the viewer observing two sailors working in a ship's boat suspended outboard by chains from two boat davits. The sailors are wearing broad-brimmed hats with flat crowns. The figure in the foreground is wearing a coat with a flared skirt, a waist seam, a back pleat [secured] by two buttons, slightly puffed sleeve heads and a sloping shoulder line. He also wears a peaked cap with a flat crown extending beyond the sides and tassel. Line is belayed to a cleat and a fairlead.
