Scope and content

The subject is a genre scene depicting a sailor standing on deck of HMS HASTINGS facing a rail with his hands clasped behind his back which is facing the viewer. He is wearing a broad-brimmed hat with a flat crown, wide-legged trousers and a short jacket with a round-cut collar. At the right of the work are several fairleads, line and a ladder.
