Scope and content

The subject is a genre scene depicting a sailor in profile seated on deck of HMS HASTINGS working with canvas. He is wearing a broad-brimmed hat with a flat crown, wide-legged trousers and a short jacket with a round-cut collar. At the left of the work are line and fairleads. A rail and deck planks are roughly sketched.
