Scope and content

The subject is a view onboard a Royal Navy ship looking towards the stern from an upper deck constructed with fore and aft planks. In the foreground, a man wearing a cloak and a top hat is looking out to sea from the port side. A dog is sitting behind him. A rail separates the main deck from a lower deck in the background. Surrounded by rigging, two sailors stand next to a covered boat.
